About

Our Story

Literature & Lapdogs is a growing organization with an important mission. We started life as an online Meetup group. In July 2024, we decided to make things more official and we began the process of establishing a non-profit organization so we can raise money more effectively to support our dual mission of celebrating literature and supporting dogs in need.

What we do

Our Mission

Literature & Lapdogs wants to foster people’s love of the arts to raise money for dogs in need in the US and around the world.

We host book groups and writing groups, networking with book lovers to celebrate a shared love of literature and to raise awareness for a good cause.

All of our events are donation-based, and you can attend for free, but any money we raise goes to help our project pups or organizations supporting dogs on the ground in the US.

Slow-Read Book Groups

Explore classic works of literature like George Eliot’s Middlemarch or James Joyce’s Ulysses with our easy-to-follow schedule. Most slow-read book groups involve reading two or three chapters per week.

Lecture Series

Did you know that Jane Austen wrote drafts of her most famous works, including Pride and Prejudice, as a teenager, or that Virginia Woolf’s last novel Between the Acts was published posthumously? Literature & Lapdogs online lecture series let you take a deep dive into the lives and works of different authors.

Writing Groups

Whether you’re writing for fun or to be published, whether you’re writing short stories, screenplays, or a novel, Literature & Lapdogs has writing groups to help you explore your creativity and hold you accountable.

Who We support

Our Rescue Pups and Projects

Literature & Lapdogs strikes a balance between offering direct support for dogs in need and supporting other charitable organizations that help dogs in need of rescue and sometimes extensive medical care. Currently, we are sponsoring four pups in Romania, where there are a high number of kill shelters. We are also helping to support the work of Cuddly and 15/10 Foundation. Below, you can find out more.

Pippa

Rescued from a kill shelter

Currently, we’re sponsoring Pippa for $50/month so that she can remain in foster care. The end goal is for her to find a forever home.

Cuddly and 15/10 Foundation

Two 501 (c) charities

Cuddly is an amazing organization supports animals all over the world. Literature and Lapdog is supporting various pups through this organization.

The 15/10 Foundation supports dogs that are unlikely to get adopted because of behavioral problems.

Literature and Lapdogs will strive to donate money to these organizations, too, especially targeting the dogs that are underfunded.
